Pro Bowl kicker Neil Rackers and former NFL punter David Brader have established the All-Metro Specialist Showcase Series, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization providing local high school long snappers, kickers and punters, including those with lack of team playing time, the opportunity to gain the recognition of college coaches without financial strain.
The idea for the All-Metro Specialists Showcase Series was sparked after a parent pulled aside Elite Special Teams Academy coaches Rackers and Brader after a group lesson, concerned that a recent lay off was impacting his son’s football future. National camps and combines are key arenas for high school athletes to get noticed by college scouts. The cost for this exposure averages $1,800 per event — including travel, lodging and meals. After missing just two national camps due to the family’s financial constraints, the athlete’s national ranking dropped from 12th to 74th.
Dovetailing with this was the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s annual selection/announcement of the region’s top football players. Every year, worthy specialists are left off the consideration list because they didn’t have the opportunity to showcase their skills in a game.
In a world where club sports and showcases have become the norm, Rackers and Brader wanted to provide an equally advantageous alternative to parents spending thousands of dollars several times a year for someone to watch their child kick or snap for only 10 minutes at each event, and provide the chance for deserving specialists to gain attention, regardless of their high school teams’ performance. The result is an unbiased, statistically-based event where kids show up and demonstrate what they can do.
Over the course of the summer, a series of seven showcases are held throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area for any specialist to chart (kick 10 field goals, 10 punts, 6 kickoffs; long snappers have a few footwork drills, a 40-yard dash and a total of 18 snaps). Through generous donations and sponsorships from local businesses, former NFL specialists, and families who have seen the impact these events have had on their athlete’s future, this one-of-a-kind platform is available FREE OF CHARGE to the athletes.

Athletes are ranked locally, based solely on the results of their performance. By offering seven different events, specialists can show improvement and demonstrate they have the level of consistency expected at the collegiate level. Those specialists are then watched closely over the course of the season and considered when recognizing the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s All-Metro Kicker and Punter. This year’s participants of the All-Metro Specialists Showcase Series will also be competing to be semi-finalists for the American Cancer Society’s Crucial Catch All-Star game to be played on December 15th, 2019 at Lindenwood University. Additionally, with enough funds, the goal is to award the top long snapper, kicker and punter a $1,000 scholarship. These scholarships will be presented at the National Football Foundation Lombardo Chapter’s awards ceremony in Spring of 2020.
